FAQ

What is an AI scribe?

An AI scribe is an advanced technology that assists your clinician by securely transcribing and organizing medical notes during your visit. This helps improve documentation, optimize your care, and allows your clinician to focus more on you.

Why is FSM using AI scribes?

At Fraser Street Medical, we are committed to innovation and excellence in patient care. Using AI scribes allows us to:

✔ Listen more attentively to you without being distracted by typing.
✔ Enhance documentation to ensure a complete and accurate medical record.
✔ Reduce clinician fatigue, improving focus and decision-making.
✔ Optimize your care by streamlining workflows, making visits more efficient.

Is my information private and secure?

Absolutely. AI scribes at FSM comply with all privacy standards, including PIPEDA (Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act). Your health information remains confidential, secure, and is not stored beyond what is necessary for medical documentation.

Do I need to sign a consent form?

You only need to provide consent once.
We are gradually sending consent forms via email, and over time, patients will be asked to sign a consent form before AI scribes are used in their care. Additionally, your clinician will inform you during visits when the AI scribe is being used.

What do I need to do?

Nothing! You can continue your visit as usual. If you have any questions, feel free to ask your clinician about AI scribes and how they enhance your care.

Can I opt out?

Yes, if you prefer not to have an AI scribe used during your visit, please let your clinician know. We respect your preferences and will ensure your care is documented manually.

How does this benefit me as a patient?

With AI scribes, your clinician can spend more time listening and engaging with you, rather than typing on a screen. This helps create a better patient experience, more thorough documentation, and enhanced continuity of care.

Nurse Practitioners are primary care clinicians that provide comprehensive care including the diagnosis and management of disease/illness, prescribing medications, ordering/interpreting laboratory/diagnostic tests, and initiating referrals to specialists. Nurse Practitioners work as independent primary care providers and develop a patient panel similar to a Family Physician. At Fraser Street Medical Clinic, Nurse Practitioners work in collaboration with other providers in the clinic by cross covering and ensuring optimum patient care for all who attend the clinic.

The CDM Nurse works with family physicians to support management of patients with chronic illness. In addition to the role, CDM Nurse carries out other clinical tasks such as baby wellness, immunizations, taking vital signs, administer medication, patient education, and many more.

We try to accommodate all patients who have an urgent issue. We have appointments that you can book in advance, but we also save same-day appointments available for when your medical issue is of a more urgent nature.

Fraser Street Medical has walk in appointments only for our own registered patients. Our regular hours are Monday-Friday from 8:15 AM-5:00 PM, Saturday from 8:00 AM-12:00 PM (closing time varies on Saturdays) to help with same day urgent visits for our patients.

We try our best to accommodate walk in patients, and will try to fit you in with your own doctor, depending on availability. However, wait times can fluctuate depending on how busy we are; our staff can usually give you a general idea of how long the wait may be.

  1. For each appointment, please bring all your medications/drugs and health supplements.
  2. Notify your doctor of any change in your medical condition or medications or failure to improve after a suggested treatment.
  3. When you call, please let the receptionist know the reason for your visit to help us plan. If you require any FORMS or PAPERWORK done, please tell the receptionist and physician right away.
  4. If you require English translation, please bring a family member or have them available via cellular phone during your appointment time for us to call.
  5. Please respond to recall requests and invitations to spend more time with your doctor and our team.

Policies

Purpose

Fraser Street Medical (FSM) is committed to innovation, excellence, and optimizing patient care. As part of this commitment, FSM has implemented AI medical scribes to enhance clinical documentation, improve workflow efficiency, and support clinicians in providing patient-centered care.

Policy Statement

FSM utilizes AI scribe technology to assist with medical documentation during patient visits. This technology is designed to:

  • Improve patient-clinician interaction by allowing clinicians to focus more on listening and engaging with patients rather than typing notes.
  • Enhance documentation accuracy and completeness, ensuring optimal continuity of care.
  • Reduce cognitive fatigue and administrative burdens on clinicians, supporting long-term sustainability in primary care.
  • Streamline clinical workflows, allowing for more efficient and effective patient care.

Privacy and Security Compliance

AI scribe technology used at FSM complies with all relevant privacy and confidentiality regulations, including the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).

  • Patient information remains secure, confidential, and is not stored beyond necessary medical documentation requirements.
  • All data handling and processing follow Canadian privacy laws and medical record-keeping standards.

Patient Consent and Notification

Fraser Street Medical is gradually obtaining consent from patients through email campaigns, asking patients to sign consent forms when they check in using our kiosk and during visits.

  • Clinicians will inform patients at the start of visits when an AI scribe is being utilized.
  • Patients have the right to ask questions about AI scribe use and its role in their care.

Patient Choice and Opt-Out

While AI scribes improve efficiency and patient engagement, participation is not mandatory. Patients who prefer not to use an AI scribe may request that their clinician document visits manually. FSM respects patient preferences and will ensure high-quality care regardless of the documentation method.

Implementation and Oversight

  • FSM will regularly review and update AI scribe usage to ensure compliance with privacy standards, optimize effectiveness, and address any patient or clinician concerns.
  • Clinicians and staff will receive ongoing training on best practices for AI scribe use, patient communication, and data security measures.

Conclusion

The use of AI scribes at FSM is part of our ongoing commitment to providing exceptional, patient-focused primary care. This technology allows us to improve documentation, enhance patient interactions, and ensure clinicians can dedicate more time to direct patient care.

  • Same-day fit-in appointments are available for urgent medical concerns.
